SPECIAL EVENTS

CARINGBRIDGE

Caringbridge is an organization that offers easy-to-create websites that help connect family and friends in time of need such as during recovery from an accident or illness. This service is free and can be accessed at www.caringbridge.com.

The way it works is that the author establishes the website that is accessed through their website and publishes information that he or she wishes known about the subject person. Only the established author can post information. In addition to providing status updates, the author can request help. Access to the site is controlled because only those to whom the author has given the site address within the caringbridge website can access it.

The branch 34 Executive Committee has decided to support this program and the immediate Past Big Sir will be the contact. For this year that is John Sanches, phone 925-846-3862, or email: jonshesanches@aol.com.   If you have any interest in this, I urge you to check out the website for further information or contact me for help.

SIRS 4 FISHING   Don Mittelstaedt   462-1885  Email  dmittel@gmail.com

All SIR members and guests are welcome and, indeed, encouraged to participate in fishing trips as well as attend the monthly meetings.  Next meeting will be Thursday, July 22nd at the Legend Sports Bar and Grill at the Diablo Creek Golf Course at 4050 Port Chicago Highway in Concord.  Meeting starts at 8:30.

A trip to Lake Davis was the highlight of our June.  Jim Andrews, John Hayes, Tom Boltz, Terry Miller, Harry Sherinian, Jack Waddell, Mario Moratorio, Bill Landers, and Joe Miscione were led by Craig Walton for several days of very productive fishing.  Most fisherman averaged over 20 fish per day, returning almost all.  Joe Peterson continued his good fortune trolling the Sacramento River for stripers.  Joe Karg, Karl Droese, and Carl Moyer took a guided trip to Lake Don Pedro where they caught a mixed bag of king and kokanee salmon.  Bob Olson fished the Burney area with his son catching trout to 5 lbs.  Don Mittlestaedt caught a few black bass fly fishing on a private lake.  Romano Gnusti made a solo excursion to Shadow Cliffs lake from the shore landing 2 nice rainbows.  Terry Miller, Harry Sherinian, Mike Corker and Carl Moyer got limits of trout from that same lake from Carl’s boat.  Joe Karg caught a nice rainbow, several small bass, and 2 king salmon at Lake McClure fishing with his son.  Karl Droese, Paul Dubow, Carl and Leah Moyer, Rich Bennett, and Terry Miller had a very successful trip for halibut in the bay, catching 8 hefty halibut.  On a different trip Roger Borgerson, Carl Moyer, Ekkehardt Keller, Paul Dubow, Rich Bennett and Ron Yates caught only 3.  Sal Costanza traveled to Lake Almanor where he conquered a 4 and half lb brown trout and 5 rainbows to 20 inches.  Bill Landers worked the delta hard for lots of black bass, and striped bass to 15 lbs.  And Jim Ballard managed to catch 4 rainbows from the Truckee River despite very high water.

We will be very busy this summer with: delta fishing for bass, crappie, bluegill, catfish, and sturgeon, trout fishing in mountain lakes and rivers, and party boat trips for salmon, sturgeon, halibut, and stripers.  These outings will include those who rarely fish but would like to try.  If you haven’t been fishing in a while, but might like to test drive an adventure come join us.

Our next meeting will be Thursday, July 22nd at the Legend Sports Bar and Grill at the Diablo Creek Golf Course at 4050 Port Chicago Highway in Concord.  Meeting starts at 8:30 am. For further information, please contact Karl Droese, Big Fish, (925-376-0468;) Carl Moyer (Branch 8 Coordinator) (925-685-5243;),  Dick Thomson, Treasurer/Secretary, (925-944-1760.) or Don Mittelstaedt (925-462-1885)

Our regular meetings are held on the 4th Thursday of the month in the Legend Sports Bar and Grill at the Diablo Creek Golf Course in Concord starting at 8:30 am. Anyone interested in fishing is welcome.

CAMERA CLUB  Don Roberts 846-5145

Our last meeting was on Wednesday, June 9th at the Pleasanton Senior Center at !:00 PM. We reviewed the pictures of our assignment for June which was to take pictures of anything within 50 feet of our own homes.  I think the most interesting thing about this assignment was the vast variety of subjects that the members found interesting to them.

In addition, we showed a few pictures of the SIR spring trip "Springtime in the Heartland of America". It was a very enjoyable trip but the photography for the trip was very challenging due to number of available low light photo opportunities.  We attended a myriad of theatrical productions under very low light conditions.  Without a tripod and the limited opportunities for bracing the camera many a photos turned out with varying amounts of blur and noise. I would welcome any input from any of you suggesting methods to improve results under these conditions.

Our next meeting will be the second Wednesday July 14th at 1:00 PM at the Pleasanton Senior Center.  The assignment for the month is to gather 12 of your favorite vacation photos for display. I think this will be a great opportunity to see areas that might be a future vacation destination for you.

The pictures this month are a couple taken on the spring trip that might be interesting to you golfers.  I hope you enjoy them.

WOOD CARVERS CLUB  Bob Kehl  443-5632

SIRs project activity has expanded considerably this month as we are all preparing for the Alameda County Fair to be held 6/23-7/11 and the “Art under the Oaks” event in July 24/25th. Projects for the fair are to be judged and require special attention to the details of competition. What makes this event fun is being able to be creative both with type of wood and subject. Most all of us will enter several projects in the competition. We also have a lot of fun demonstrating wood carving to interested people during the open Fair days.

Featured, in the picture, are two items carved by Bob Kehl (121) to be entered in the Fair. The whimsical house is carved from Cottonwood bark. This project is completely in the round (has a view on all sides) and even has landscape. The house is to be entered in the Fairâ's “ornamental” category. The stylized Cheetah is carved from oak utilizing the grain of the wood to show the natural look of a Cheetah's coat. The base under the Cheetah is black walnut burl. The Cheetah will be entered in the “animal realistic” category.

We meet weekly on Tuesday from 9am-4pm and on Thursday 6 – 8 pm at the Pleasanton Senior Center Wood Shop. This group is open to all interested in learning & participating in the art of wood carving, whether experienced or a beginner. Remember, no experience is necessary to learn how to carve. We will get you started with safety and easy to do projects and progress from there. If you are interested, call me at 925-443-5632. Come and join us for a fun experience.
